Painless upgrade to WordPress 2.5

WordPress 2.5

Upgrading to the new and improved WordPress 2.5 was a painless affair at this site.

To upgrade, I followed the standard recommendations: deactivating all plugins and uploading the new WordPress files to my host.

When flashing up with the fresh files in place, WordPress reported that a database upgrade was required. A click on the “Upgrade WordPress” link had me in business quickly and without incident.

Each plugin was then re-activated, one at a time, using the one-click automatic upgrade feature. A quick check for proper operation after each plugin activation revealed no issues—everything went perfectly.

WordPress 2.5 boasts faster load times, a new admin panel, a new Media Manager, gravatar support, multi-file uploads, automatic plugin updates, a new gallery function and more.

The new Admin Panel

Happy Cog performed a complete redesign of the Administration Panel which now features changeable color schemes and a widget-based dashboard.

PlanetOz quickly takes advantage of a new option which allows users to set their own color scheme in Per User Custom Stylesheet.

Dean Robinson has already released an Admin Theme called Fluency, for the new Admin Panel.

  • Options has been renamed Settings.
  • Settings, Plugins, and Users now float to the right.
  • Blogroll is now called Links and resides under Manage.

Gravatars

Weblog Tools Collection demonstrates how the new, pluggable, Gravatar support will be used in Gravatars and WordPress 2.5.

Asides

WordPress 2.5 now requires PHP 4.3 or later.
